Electoral vs Popular vote?

Its been awhile since I learned about the voting process, but to me it seems more logical to make MY (and every other American's) vote count. Wouldn't that be by the popluar vote? Isn't that what "popular" means? Isn't the electoral vote just another way for the parties to keep "control"? Let US.. the average joe.. truely choose our president.
