Hot Tub--Spa Owners (Discolored Fresh Water)--What does this mean?

Hi, What your describing is a very common condition with well water and older homes. Most likely the source will be copper from your pipes. You did the right thing by first balancing your water and then shocking it, to kill off any bacteria. Start adding a Metal remover product (usually a stain and scale) (actually doesn't remove it but makes it inert). Copper and Iron negate the ability for Bromine and chlorine to work properly. Glad to see your paying attention to the hardness of your water too. Make sure it is between 250-400ppm. A great way to clean your spa on the cheap is to use distilled vinegar. Add 4 cups when your getting ready to drain the spa and refill it and run it through a couple of cycles and it will help clean out the pipes. Since it is acidic do not let it sit in the tub for more then an hour.
