If Gazza had signed for Sir Alex's Manchester United for the 88/89 season ?

I seem to remember Gazza being pretty overated really. It would have been a typical united signing because even back then they would regularly break the transfer record again and again to try and get a winning formula. What is surprising is how Fergie managed to hold on to his job so long - banners in the Stretford end calling for him to go - then a lucky FA Cup win bought him a bit more time.
